Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) was an American artist celebrated for his inventive fusion of media, from painting and sculpture to performance and photography. Born in Port Arthur, Texas, he transformed postwar art with works like his Combines and vibrant silkscreen paintings, but photography played a central role in his practice, especially from 1979 onward. That year, his collaboration with the Trisha Brown Dance Company on Glacial Decoy marked a renewed focus on the medium, using projections of his own black-and-white images. From 1979 until a stroke in 2002, every photographic image in his work was his own, underscoring photography’s deep integration into his creative process.
