Deep Fathom Currents, Oil on prepared heavy construction paper, 84" x 108"
This style derives from an exploration of complex three-dimensional forms interacting within a two- dimensional surface. These images originally began as an expression of compositional structures ordered throughout the image itself. By selecting the basic shape of a cube, I rely on the viewer’s awareness of perspectival illusion to imbue the flat rectangular surface of the picture with deep constellations of energetic movement permeating the design. The eye follows the swirling dance of the patterns set before it, connecting, disengaging, and reconnecting different parts of the image in a series of almost musical displays. Intermingling vibrations of the shapes on the canvas trigger corresponding pulses in the visual field, fusing the experience of viewers’ optical sensation with an emotional engagement by their mind.
