The current body of work consists of cityscapes begun in 2005. Each painting in this ongoing series focus on views of a particular city, creating a composition from the linear patterns of its buildings, bridges, and streets.

These large scale paintings, ranging from 4’ x 4’ to 8’ x 6’, are painted in oil on primed linen. I start by applying four or five layers of color over a period of several days. Then I create the image using black oil paint and a thin brush. I usually have a strong vision of what I want to paint, and do not sketch on paper or on canvas beforehand. The process of creating the cityscape in black brush strokes takes place over a single working session of four to seven hours. Sometimes things come easily, sometimes it is a struggle. My favorite pieces are the ones that come easily.

I love the feeling that these paintings give me. The colors are expressive, the design provokes thought, and the painting takes me to the city that is represented. If I have visited the city, my impression of that place is definitely expressed in the painting. Some of the cities are painted from photographs, some from memory, and some from my imagination.

These paintings embody my complex feelings about cities. I like their energy, accessibility, people, history, and architecture. I also find cities claustrophobic, with the sensory overload of too many people and too much going on. My paintings have the whole range of these feelings, all at the same time.

I would like people to approach my works by asking themselves if the piece moves or touches them in some way. Everything that flows out of me and onto the canvas is raw and natural. I started painting six years ago and once I started, I never stopped. I paint everyday and love every moment.
