ARTIST'S STATEMENT: Julie Carbone Johnson I wanted these works to convey the spirit of joy and love of life while being fully immersed in living it. I believe that true joy is passionately untethered to the Earth. It’s very essence dances with freedom. Living life, and being aware of all of its complexities is what creating is for me, and what I enjoy doing. These paintings emerged from that nascent awareness. I create in a cellar, on the floor. Caged in by the windowless space, I begin in ignorance, unaware and blind. After much meditation, I become mindful of what the work is, and I am enabled to create. An experience for me that is similar to parenting. Not an easy task, but an exhilarating roller coaster ride, to say the least. When you look at my art, I would like you to put your initial reaction aside and step back, look, and then look again. If I’ve done my job right, you will become acquainted with, and cognizant of your own feelings, and enjoy the journey as the work becomes alive and speaks to you. To quote one of my favorite authors, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Julie Carbone Johnson |
